But, for some UNKNOWN reason Startron, the blue fluid in a clear plastic bottle, seemed to help my truck gain an extra MPG last Spring...but it sure as hell broke a LOT of carbon loose in my 2 strokes. I won't use it in my mixed fuel no mo ever again.

You call it snake oil but this stuff is darn goood. I have never seen any gas oil mix that keeps equipment clean over long periods. Especially if you are using it constantly. I have now run about 7 carb thru it and every one has improvements in how they start and run. I don't plan on running it in the gas all the time just for cleaning stuff up. I got 40 carb that have 5 to 15 years use on them and I will get to all of them. I know now that I can extend the life of equipment.

Ed....This SnakeOil is not a cure.....its a temporary fix..... This is why you wont find too many tenured mechanics that like this stuff. Its the petroleum industries version of the pharmacuticals "cold medicine". Mechanics want the cure....not just something that fixes it for a day. These guys are having it both ways...selling junk fuel and stuff that might make it better for a little while. |

I agree with piston slapper. Its more like Fixaflat.. works in a tight queeze by a consumer but there is still a tire that needs to be attended to. might be able to get by for a couple days, but more times than not, it will re-occur. mainly cause there is no cure for consumer ignorance these things will just keep comming out and used as a cure all.

There is no magic cure all. But Mechanic in a Bottle does work in many cases, and can save a lot of time. I've successfully used it on several carbs as a last resort before replacement, and they're still running today.
As for welch plug sealing, I'm still using nail polish and haven't had problems. The pink stuff with glitter in it seems to work best. |

Snake oil user's use pink nail polish with glitters????
You put this stuff inside your carb? I can't wait to see this stuff on the SnapOn truck. How do you get the glitter out of the jets and ports ? You just know they're gonna end up there..... Posted via Mobile Device |

As far as welch plug sealing goes, I switched to Seal-All http://eclecticproducts.com/sealall.htm. Stihl recommended it at one of their updates a couple of years ago. I sometimes use Epoxo 88 on the edge of the disc. Both work really well and seem to hold up.

Ed.....I may be the exception, but,
In the last 10 years I haven't soaked a single carb... I disassemble the carb and spray brake cleaner through All the air and fuel passages. I may spray it down and let it sit for 5 minutes, but that's about it. With that being said,I realize most people don't have a thorough understanding of what is going on inside the carb, and where its going on. Get some flow charts and try to understand them. Then you won't have to hope that something magical will happen in the soak tank...... Posted via Mobile Device |
