Badboy MZ, Hustler Sport or Exmark Pioneer

I mow about 8 acres of lawn a week on mostly level ground currently with a 98 Cub Cadet Z54. I would like to get a second ZTR so my teenage sons can help out and I have a back up if the Cub Z54 should break down. I would like to stay around the $4000 mark. Which would you choose and why?

Hustler Sport
Tubuluar frame around the back of engine
wheels under the rear for wheelies or rather stopping one.
I think it would be harder to tear up and easier access to fix.
Good price too

which pioneer are you looking at? the E or the S series? The Pioneer S is definitely the stronger choice over the MZ and Sport IMO. The Pioneer E still has an edge. Both use the same 24hp Kawasaki twin and have a a 7 gallon fuel capacity vs 2.1 on the sport and 3.0 on the MZ.

The Pioneer S uses ZT3100 hydros vs the EZTs that the MZ and sport uses. The ZT3100 is serviceable where as the EZTs are not. It has larger tires caster(13x5-6) and drive(22x9.5-12) vs the 18" drive and 11" caster tires on the MZ and Sport. It has a 5" deep deck, 8mph top speed vs 6mph on the Sport and MZ.

If you are looking at the pioneer E, it has ZT2800 hydros (serviceable), 7 gallon tank, 4" deck, 7mph top speed and 20" drive tires.

Exmarks do have better transmissions, The sport has the Kaw for about $200 more but i thought the Sport had zt2800. I don't like the EZT (why i bought my snapper w/EZT3100).
Frame on the Hustler just looks tough. I was just thinking about the teenager part anything that can be bent probably will.

From the brochure, the Sports use an unserviceable EZT. In my opinion the hydros are the most important part of the mower. The pioneers also have full engine protection like the sport.

I don't think i phrased that post right. I agree with you about the hydros. The reason i bought the snapper s50x was the transmission ZT3100 (commercial) and the Kaw FX (commercial) version over the FH (residential)and EZT (residential) on the Hustler Sport i was looking at. The engine protection on the Hustler is a"pipe frame" of sorts that would not be as easily bent as the stamped metal guard on my snapper and the exmark. When I read teenagers that frame was the first thing that came to mind. But when comparing the drive trains the pioneer comes out on top. More likely to tear up an EZT than a ZT and at least it's servicable.
In my unqualifed opinion.

Around here, the Exmark Quest is priced about $4000 before taxes, so the Pioneer (either one) which are a step up form the Quest will be higher priced I’m sure.

I have a BadBoy MZ48 that I bought at the end of last years mowing season. Mine is a 2010 model, V-Twin 26hp Briggs Pro, 48” deck. I was actually looking at the the MZ42, but a guy here on LS (Retrodog aka Kevin) gave me a good deal on the MZ48 that I couldn’t refuse. I only have about a ˝ acre of mowable grass in my yard, a country church yard (paid) across the road that might be about 3/4 acre to mow. Extra yards I’ll be mowing is our church yard which is smaller than my house yard, and I'll be helping mow the yard at the volunteer fire department (I'd guess an acre max?) where I help out. Price was the biggest factor why I bought this mower…I couldn’t afford a higher priced ZTR mower…but I’m very happy with it.

I had researched a bunch of mowers from other brands, but it came down to the Sport and MZ. Common features on both mowers are the steel fabricated decks, foot-assist deck lifts, welded steel frames and higher blade tip speeds. The Sport does have the 2 year complete mower warranty over the MZ 1 year complete mower warranty. 2 little things I liked about the Sport was the cupholder and a designated place for the optional hourmeter. The ‘wheelie bars’ on the Sport, the Honda option engines, the auto park brake system, and an optional mulch kit are other things I liked about the Sport. The 2011 MZ’s now have Kawasaki engine options. I’m not sure if the Sports have a Kawaski option this year.

The ultimate decision for me choosing the MZ over the Sport was comfort. The Sport felt cramped for my long legs. A friend of mine has the Sport and I tried it and even with the handles raised, it was to cramped. I sat on a MZ at a TSC, and it was much better. I have more Hustler dealers closer to me, but I will be working on my mower myself and I really don’t think I’ll be having any warranty issues with my MZ. I know these 2 mowers have the EZT hydros (and yes, I would have liked serviceable hydros) but for my mowing needs, the EZT’s will be just fine. Kevin told me that he has a customer that runs a MZ42 commercially and the EZT’s are holding up fine. For what I was looking for in a quality ZTR mower, one that had serviceable hydro’s would have been at least $1000 (approx.) more…and I didn’t have the extra money to spend. Aside from the hydro’s, the build quality is top notch on these 2 mowers. I’d say they are the best bang for the buck in there class. The 26hp Kawasaki engine option on the MZ is $300 over the 27hp Briggs Pro which would bring it to about $3700 retail before taxes…Kevin (Retrodog) can correct me if I’m wrong.
