0W-40 oil

I just resently bought a Polaris 400 sportsman, which has a 4 cycle water cooled moter. To get to the ?, they come from the factory with 0W-40 polaris syn oil. I wanted to get some opinions on using this weight of oil in a air cooled motor like my Kohlers or Kaw's? I see that Amsoil has this weight oil also.

Me and a buddy ran the **** out of our sportsman 400's for 3 years and used 10W 40 motor oil made by polaris. Ran fine oil changes looked good.

0w40 would be too thin at startup and too thick once it gets warm to use in either the Kohler or the Kaw. If you want to use synthetic just use Mobil 1 10w30 like the rest of us.

I use Mobil 1 0W-30 in all engines (truck and mower) year round.

The first number being 0W is the winter rating when its cold. It lets a cold engine start easier and have lubrication available immediately at start up.

Put a quart of 15W-50 reqular grade petroleum oil in the freezer next to a quart of 0W-30 synthetic for 3 or 4 hours. Pour them out and see who the winner is.

The second number is the grade for warm applications, 30 being thinner than 40 or 50 when it is warm or hot.

Mobil 1 and Amsoil are both great products. I really notice the benefit of synthetics when it is below zero and I go to start. The other benefit is the high tolerance to resisting thermal breakdown in high heat situations, which makes it perfect for mowers.
