Addition:

Ran tests with #5 blue Floodjet tips, high gear wide spray
Output looks to be about 0.28 gal/K. So one tank would cover around 43K sq ft with the blue tip vs almost 60K sq ft with the gray tip.

Machine running at 3400 RPM wide open.
I guess the thing I am curious about is why I am only getting like a 7 ft pattern?
Literature claims 11 ft, no way jose.

Well Something is obviously not right. I also just picked up a magnum that needs a litle tlc, so i'm moderately interested in your finding's. I have not read the manual yet but the first thing I would do is put the machine on a stand and run it wide open with no tips to see how much output there is. If it's not up to snuff well then I would move onto the pump and belt checking to make sure everything is how it should be and not all worn out.

If everything with the pump and output is good I would then move on to the tips and the angle of the tips (which has allready been mentioned). If the only issue is the width of the spray pattern and not the output I would concentrate on finding the right tips and fine tuning the angle that the tip is set at. with my PG Ultra I found that the angle of the tip made a big difference in the spray width and uniform coverage. Does the manual tell you which tips to use? Have you called PG to see what the reccomended tips to use are?
I will be overhauling the MAG I recently purchased soon. Good luck

Things to look at:

Make sure screen inserts that go into nozzle flange are not filled with junk, happens easily.

Make sure belt is adjusted and in good condition.

Check in the tank screens.

Make sure the valve that opens / closes when you pull the spray lever is working correctly, I have seen those crap out.

Get the motor at 3450 rpm's, it does help spin the pump quicker.

The pump can be weak also, they are wear items and don't always hold up like you expect them to.

Some herbicides seem to weaken the pumps more than others.

Again all great info but I am looking for someone to take a look at my data and tell me if it is really far off or not. I am not saying whether a 7ft pattern is good/bad cause I never owned a Mag. I want someone who has used a Mag to tell me their experience, what tips were you using, etc. 7ft seems reasonable for a single Floodjet tip - I was getting 8ft out of my Centri with 2 Floodjets.

My effective spray pattern with my PG Mag is 7 foot t/- a few inches. I have never since day one got 11 foot. I don't know anyone who has an effective spray pattern at 11 feet either. Maybe a few stray tiny droplets of water but not considered effective. With overlapping and an upgraded larger I.D. hose from pump to tip's I get 1 QT/1000 or 4000/gallon. I will go look tonight and see what tip I am using. It is not the original tip that came with it 4 years ago, but an upgraded tip to accomadate the larger hose and I wanted more carrier/1000. And my rpm is 3450 but-- that is not always constant, up a steep hill or flying down a hill changed the my rpm.

Ok well what does pg say the spread width should be? If its 11 feet then its 11 feet not 7. You need to check your output to make sure your pumping close to the correct amount stated im sure in the manual. If its not pumping enough well then you need to fix that first and foremost. Then move on to your tips and spray width. This is pretty simple stuff.
My ultra has an effective width of 9-10 feet. If the mag is only capable of 7 than somthing seems a little out of whack

Standing still in neutral--at wide open throttle--how many ounces per minute does it deliver? You need a stop watch and an assistant to hold the bucket in front of the nozzle, of course.

Bear in mid the Ultra upgrade uses a "2.2 gpm Magnum style pump".

That does not mean you will put out 2.2 gallons, after restrictions due to nozzle, but you have some reserve capacity.

Perfect. This is what I wanted to know. I will await your advices on the spray tip you have in. But it looks like my pattern is not really too far out of whack then, and my outputs with the blue and gray tips surrounds your output, so I would say I am not seeing anything too out of the ordinary.

That said, to the rest of you guys, thanks for the tips on going through the pump system....I will plan to do regardless.

Out of the blue #5 tip - output in one minute would be right at 56-58 oz or so.

If you want output without nozzle, then I would have to run that test I did not do to this point.
