Expirence! Expirence! Expirence!
Past jobs. If they have had many many many past jobs than its going to indicate 1 poor worker 2 not loyal 3 over all probably steer clear of them
Family status. A single young guy is more app. To laying in a bar all night the before work.
Appearence. An 80 year old women doesnt wanna see some guy out in her yard that looks like he just got released from jail a few hours before.
Smarts. You cant trust someone to proform well if they are dumber than sled tracks.
Fellon. I have had good luck and bad luck. Some guys just made a mistake in the past and are great workers. Some are still just too sketchy and the ones that were in for a long time are very lazy i think from pretty much doing nothing those years.
Pretty much just use your common sense and im sure it will weed out the bad ones.

Good advice, although I don't worry much if they have no experience, I kinda prefer them to not have any.

Felon, sorry ain't doing it, we do a background check.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Also, I agree you should have narrowed it down.

You can meet them, ask and answer questions and tell them you will let them know. You have other interviews to get through first. E-mail the bad news and phone the good news.

Google employee interviewing techniques.
You can find some good questions and other ideas.

People should also check to see if they need an employee handbook in their State.
Also, you need to prove that you have trained people properly on each piece of equipment. Get a contract signed. Have a list of equipment and as they are trained and able to operate each piece of equipment, you both sign off on it. They get a copy.

That way they can't come back later and say "you never told me I couldn't use a
lawnmower to trim the top of the hedge"

OK now im in a problem because every one that showed up was either a drug user or didn't look like they could take the heat.

Keep trying. You can get them to sign a contract that says " drug or alcohol use before or during work will not be tolerated"

If they only use cannabis, then you should be fine to hire, as long as you do the above.
Meth and those other hard street drugs, are bad news.
