Screen goes black on Search

When I use the Search function the my browser window goes dark, I can barely see the search results and the links from the search results are not activated.

This only happens when using Search, I'm able to open and read threads no problem.

Using a Mac, OS 10.6, same results with FF and Safari.

there are banners that show up when searching for certain key words or phrases...there is an "x" that you can click on to close out the ad

Doesn't appear to be the problem. No "X" appears on the screen, though I sometimes experience the same issue when I go to the site but I'm not signed in--then I get the "X".

I've tried clicking all over the page--no workee.
