Gonna be getting a homemade 5X10 trailer this week without title. Want to know if anyone else in the state of Illinois has gone through the process of getting a homemade trailer a title and registered and what the fee is.. everytime I call the dmvs I'm hold hold for a while and would appreciate some answers on here. Thanks

here to get one registered you have to have it inspected by the state police and they stamp a state police vehicle id number on it. you also have to provide itemized reciepts where you purchased the materials to build it.

I'll be purchasing it from someone off of Craigslist if it is in good condition. What were to happen if he did not have the receipts and what should I look for on it to make sure its legal

look around the tongue, if there is a VIN # stamped on it, or they had it registered and had tags on it, then there is a title for it, and you wont be able to re-register it. you will have to have the original matching title and have it transfered to you , you will probably need a bill of sale also.

without reciepts there is no way to prove it was "homemade". you could simply steal a trailer, grind the numbers off paint it and claim it as homemade. this is why they require the reciepts. again, this is what they require here, your location may be different

Because you can find cheaper ones on craigslist, just have to sift through the scammers and cheaply made trailers.. also wanted to know the legalities on home made trailers and getting them titled.. but I very well may start considering going to a dealer since ive been searching daily for the past few weeks and haven't found anything worth while and I could have had more jobs by now. But I appreciate the help ffemt.

anytime. I have built 2 of my own, bt all of the ones i have purchased were from dealers. If you purchase from an individual, even on a titled trailer, you nver know what you are going to get, and may never be able to transfer it.

You probably should sift on past this one too. You never know if it was built right if its homemade.

Making the assumption that you don't have commercial vehicle insurance. I would not risk a home made trailer. Too much can go wrong.

Same here as ffemt stated for Va....In Va the manufacturer has to have the police come out and issue the numbers for the title....and the manufacturer has to have the title to transfer to you...but that is the state of VA
