I have a lot of lawns with problems with too much water and I am suspecting no one has gauges.
Not often enough. You have to have a controller that will recognize the input from a rain gauge and react accordingly. Most traditional controllers on the market today (those not set up for "smart control") do not accept an input from a rain gauge, but rather a rain sensor. The benefit of a rain gauge with a controller that recognizes it is that the controller will count the amount of rain fall as moisture and prevent the controller from watering until that moisture is used up through ET.
