Exmark HP oil question 23HP 52"

A guy is selling an Exmark with 226 hrs on it. He said he put synthetic oil in it too soon (not enough time for the pistons to set in) and it started smoking. Is this bad and is the engine ruined? It is a sweet ride and I'd like to get it but I don't want the engine to have damage. Any help? I have absolutely no experience with Exmarks.

My 2001 HP has well over 2000 hours on it now, and has intermittently smoked on start up and had a periodic valve tap for what seems like forever. Still use it weekly. Never one engine issue in all this time. If it's an older Kohler, expect noise and smoke.....

The engine has nothing to do with exmark. Does it smoke all the time? Is it just at start up? I had 2 hps 23/52 with kohlers. Both smoked at start up

Yeah, does it actually consume oil or just a little smoke at start-up? I suggest you post this over in the mechanics forum and mention what brand of engine while you're at it. That machine is available with both Kawasaki and Kohler engines in 23HP.

My fault, its a Kohler. He didn't specify whether it smoked running or during start-up.

I only had a back fire on my older ones. My newer kohlers never had a problem. My new kawis now are leaking oil and have a back fire at times

As long as there's nothing else wrong with the engine, just drain the oil and change the filter, and use something like straight 10W to help it break it in, then change it after whatever the manual says was supposed to be the specified break in period when new.

if it is a kohler then that means its probably a 27hp, i have that exact one right now, runs GREAT! only problems was the fuel pump dying and magnetos needed to be replaced but what do you expect for a mower with 800 hours on it?
