Day Labor Hiring

Have any of you ever used day labor agencies like Labor Ready / Labor Finders / Command Staffing / etc to hire unskilled workers? What is the experience like?

How "good" are the people you're sent?
How well does the process work? Love it or hate it?
Does the agency take care of all administrative paperwork (I9s, W2s, etc), as well as payroll and workers comp for the unskilled workers? How helpful is that?

I'm trying to understand the the process of hiring unskilled workers better - would love to hear from folks who have hired before from a day labor center / staffing agency.

I have used a "temp" agency. Usually I'll bring the prospect to them and they'll process him, I-9, WC, witholding, etc, all of it. Costs vary, but they take care of all the headaches, I pay them and I'm legally seperated from liabilty unless there is gross negligence or breech of contract on my side. I'll use them during the height of the season when I need to beef up the crews. I won't need the "temps" during the off season.

I've managed to keep the cost to around $13.00 an hour per employee, I don't care what the agency pays the worker - the agency takes care of everything else and I stay legal. Even $15.00 per employee is worth not having to deal with all the book keeping and paperwork.

The experience with the guys you get at Home Depo is great. I don't know what you need all these agencies.

We used to use them all the time at the company I worked at till one of our guys was carrying something with one and he said f&%k this and dropped the 200 pound stick of steel. Our guy was out of work for 6 months and will never be right again. I have little to no trust in those guys now I will use them for the shittest jobs but nothing else. Nothing to where they could get me or any one on my crew hurt.

:
No you pick the legal ones since you seem to know how to determine that!

I don't go to Home Depot's, 7-11's street corners or bus stops and pick up undocumented migrant labor... there are labor halls down here where I can pick up an individual who is LEGAL and willing to work if I need to, which I usually don't.

I have full time crews I flesh out in season by bringing their referred people (usually friend or family) to a temp agency and having them processed there for hire by me through the agency.

Run your business legitimately as a business not as a nickle and dime hack mow & blow & go shop.

My last post on this issue...

Never engage in an argument with an idiot. He'll only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

I don't either, I go to there casa and pick them up. They are hardworking, conscientious, and honest. They don't whine and complain, my "Pedro" (who actually is Pedro) even insist on cleaning up the inside of my trucks. They don't call in sick, rarely spend time on their cell phones, etc. These guys appreciate a job, unlike your local whiteboys.
