8" ring of gly around tree, possible damage?

To avoid ringing and killing a tree with a trimmer I have seen people spray a ring of gly around the tree.
I did notice on a birch where this was done one of the four 6" trunks was 75% defoliated the rest looked fine though.
Anyone seen a gly label saying not to spray around the trunk of a tree?

It sounds like something else is getting to the tree,...possibly Birch bore or something. The gly would not do this (if properly applied). I HAVE heard of people using season long control/ground clear type stuff thinking it is like Roundup or something. This is a HUGE no no.

I can't talk about Northern Trees but the FOX TAIL PALM Tree has a problem with Glyphosate sprayed around the base. No other palms or plants I know of have the same problem.

it is one thing to do a off label applications. It is total stupidity to post it on the world wide web and expect people to approve.

There are way more safer products(organic) now that use plant oils to total kill any vegetation around trees without harming the trees, people or the environment. RU has been linked to birth defects.
If we build our soils organic matter by 1-2%, we can sequester all the CO2 that has ever been created by man for the past 100 years.

I have neard of new trees that had injured bark from string trimming, dying off when roundup was sprayed around them. Never older trees that were healthy.

Roundup at full strength and even half strength wiped, ragged, and sprayed on open wounds of certain trees can cause defoliation. This technique is described on this forum often. If a birch has prior line trimmer damage and open wounds, depending on the mixture of gly, you could have damage sustained from the spraying. However, look at the lower end of the trunk and look for small holes under the bark. Bronze Birch Borer's are notorious for defoliating trees once the sap flow has been separated.
Non-the-less, defoliation of one tree out of a group doesn't necessary conclude herbicide damage. If you have a close and far picture of the tree it may be easier to see what is going on.
