Those inline Dodge Cummings diesel engines build higher torque in lower RPM's than V8's diesels, makes a big difference for towing big loads.Other factors that contribute to higher fuel mileage, reducing in transmission internal parts rotating mass,O/D reduction %,tire size,manual/automatic,etc,etc.

I dont have mine chipped either. Now that good gas mileage is on level flat ground and at 55. Anything higher than that and it goes south in a hurry. We use to go to alot of NASCAR races everywhere. And my wife just hated for a Ford or Chevy to pass me because she knew what was going to happen. Just loved to blow back buy them in the hills. Now this aint bashing Ford but going to these races we seen more newer Fords along side the road with the hoods up. Never seen any of the older ones just the new Super Duty ones. And this was in the mountains where they had a strain on them.

2011 ram 4500 it says I get about 13-16 mpg empty that drops to 9-10 when I'm towing and got a full load of grass. I got a 99 ram 3500 with the inline 6 diesel and get similar mileage. I wish it was better but it beats the hell out of what my old boss got with the 460 in his 96 f350 4-5 mpg and that's being kind I think it was even worse then that.

why is the fuel bill killing you? is your fuel bill for the year above say 6-10% of gross. if it is I would look into why. I know fuel is a concern but so are a lot of things.

Here, fuel is a concern but not really. it is a percentage of gross but it is at the lower end of percentage of cost of business.

My 5.9 Cummins puts 500 hp to the ground and averages around 15 mpg no matter what kind of driving im doing. The 4.10 gears help around town but hurt on the highway.

I have a 1991 dodge with the 5.9 cummins I have gotten as high as 24 mpg on the highway empty. I've also gotten 13.5 pulling a 30' fifth wheel. I don't know of any other diesels that get as good of mileage as the cummins.

06' Dodge longbed, gets an average of 16 empty city and that quickly drops to around 12mpg when pulling around 5,000-6,000 pounds. Pulling my 1500# boat last weekend to the lake and back we saw 18.5mpg but again quickly dropped once the work week started back up again. I know for a fact that a gasser truck of the same size would be getting around 8-10 mpg so its not great but better than a gasser. Lately she has been sucking a little more fuel as the AC has been on full blast with these 100 degree days. This fall I will be getting a pretty big camper to pull behind her with all highway miles and itll be interesting to see what kinda mileage I can get with a big load but all cruising and no over populated city traffic.

Mine is an 07 5.9 liter mega cab dually diesel in the pic. I am getting 25mph without a trailer and around 17 when pulling. It has a 6" lift and mud tires.
I have a diable tuner, an afe stage 2 cold air intake, and a straight exhaust with an aeroturbine muffler (not so loud), I only spent around $1000 for the upgrades, but we installed ourselves.
