They're substantially more up front but I put one in a couple of years ago and with a 15y/o daughter that likes to take showers "until the hot water runs out" my gas bill went down by almost 50%. It was worht it for us anyway though, to have hot water to take our own showers after she finally decided to get out of hers. You can't put a price on no more cold showers.
I actually did think of that. I started a thread in the Off Topic area (yeah, who posts there right?). There were a few factors that swayed me. Up front cost, my GF and I have never run out of hot water here but partly because it's a 50 gallon tank instead of 40, access for the tank is very limited as it is, he even had to take out a 1" gas line that ran directly in front of the tank - vertically, and we have hard water here at the house. I don't like drinking the water out of the faucet as it tastes odd. I read that hard water is rough on the tankless. I had two of the three plumbers advise against it. We really did consider it though.
