Urgent liner question

I am having to put a new liner in my pond and I'm wondering if I need to remove the old one or can I put the new one on top.

No you'll need to pull the old liner out. From what I was told the liner on top of the liner can catch each other and cause a tear. Kind of like a friction tear. Man you are just having the worst luck with your pond. I feel for you.

I have to disagree, Keith. I have never heard of a 'friction tear', much less a tear caused by placing two layers of liner. Neither liner is going to move once the installation is complete. How can you have what you call a 'friction tear'?

It is advisable to cut several slits in the old liner at the deepest point of the pond to prevent water from accumulating between the 2 layers of liner. If you have rocky soil, the old liner will just give you an extra level of protection.

Sorry that you find it necessary to do this, but rest easy that you should not have any more problems with leaks after installing a large enough one-piece liner.

Exactly wat the frog said I've done it for years with no problem.. I've never heard of a friction tear myself either..

To be honest that's what I was told at a build a pond day years ago, and have never had to test that theory. The one thing that you will have to do is cut your old liner to keep the hydostatic pressure from from building up between the two liners. I personally would pull the old liner out and look for places that need adjusting and use the old liner for a pondless somwhere else on the property. After ixing the hole of course.

Not to take away from the legitimacy of some of these events, many "build-a-hole" days are less than a desirable source for complete and accurate information. Many are nothing more than a sales presentation by a manufacturer or distributor and led and moderated by a person that has as much hands-on experience in Water Feature construction as Roto-Rooter and a knowledge level of aquatic ecology equivalent to that of a Microsoft technician.
