New lawn? Mushy grass? Is it exceptionally wet? Has weather been hot? Are the spots completely dead, depresed and slimey?
If so, I vote for pythium disease. Bad news; it spreads fast under the right conditions, especially if you have ryegrass in the mix. http://www.ces.purdue.edu/extmedia/BP/BP-109-W.pdf

Sorry no personal experience treating pythium. Banol and SubdueMaxx are listed by university sources.
AT temps over 85 degrees pythium can spread fast. But of course, if temperature drops 10 degrees, or if you can reduce excess wetness and poor drainage, that works, too. Do not water after 12 noon to reduce humidity during the nighttime period. Do not add nitrogen until temps cool off. http://www.apsnet.org/edcenter/intro...iumBlight.aspx
