thinking about getting in to the lawn care business.
I have been working in cube making good money, but rotting on the inside.
I sit too long, and stare at these monitors for even longer. I have switched jobs thinking that would help. I always wanted to start my own business. I have a residential lawn tractor, trimmer... yadda yadda... Could always upgrade me commercial stuff if it pans out. I am super mechanically inclined and could fix most anything that will cause downtime. Maybe I could get a few weekend jobs and see how it goes.. Upgrade my truck and plow in the winter.... I'm on my wife's health insurance. The only problem is, the growing season is over. How would I get started? Advertise now and give a couple of estimates in preparation for next season? I'd also hate to undercut a local business that does a great job that reflects their higher price. advice? |

Why does every Joe blow who is tired of their job resort to landscaping?!? If you plan on ever being more then mow and blow and cutting for bottom dollar its not something you should just stumble into. To be successful to need combination of experience and education just like any other job, and if your not going to invest that time your not helping anyone! It seems every day I log on there is another hack who is tired of their job and thinks they can do landscaping because they have a tractor. Stick with your dam day job!!
That's my rant and you were just the unlucky one who posted at the wrong time!! |

From the way he phased his original post it doesn't sound like his dream to be a landscaper....he just thinks its an easy way to make some extra cash on the side, not that my post will effect his decision either way but at least he will put some thought into it.

If I were in your position, I'd take it as a complement. I wasn't planning on quitting the day job, just looking for extra money that may turn into something. I have plowed my own home as a kid (dad's setup in 95) and now as an adult with a long, steep driveway, plow myself with my own rig. I am accustomed to labor, but have gotten soft in the last few years. I work hard and take pride in my work. I would get insurance. |

Due to many factors....don’t quit your day job or night job.
Having a wife with medical insurance helps greatly. Having a supportive wife [goals and dreams etc.] even better. Each market is different and it takes time to find ones niche. Quitting a job cold turkey these days and jumping into this business not recommended.
