Removing generator from an older Tecumseh

Have a Coleman brand generator thats probably twenty years old if not more. Runs great, but its leaking oil from the crankshaft seal. I need to get the generator out of the way, but can't figure out how to get the rotor off the shaft. I tried a puller, but it felt like it was going to break the end of the rotor (the part where the brushes make contact at the end) because its some sort of composite. Any ideas here? I snapped a few pics, any help would be great, thanks!

Don't have any idea if this link to a Coleman generator is typical of yours or not.

Does your unit have a through bolt that retains the generator to the tapered crankshaft? If so, what you may try is to find a similarly threaded bolt but an inch or two longer. Thread the longer bolt into the crankshaft securely, then use an air impact hammer on the bolt head in an attempt to break the bond between the two tapered pieces. A sharp blow from a larger hammer may yield the similar results.

You got it Dutch.
If the bolt is threaded about an inch, you may be able to unscrew the thru bolt about half an inch, and smack it with a hammer.
That should pop it off the taper. Dont miss the bolt head and hit anything important.

Remove the flywheel cover/recoil assembly, Put the long through bolt back into the rotor leaving it loose/sticking out a little. Put the proper size socket on the flywheel retainer nut then smack the end of the socket with a hammer, The rotor is garonteeed to pop right off. The through bolt keeps it from hitting the floor/bench.....

Do it RestroRob's way....
It'll save you the impossible task of finding a replacement thru bolt , if you damage it...

Most of the powermates you can just smack the side of the rotor(the steel sandwich part, not the coils) with a large rubber mallet. Put the bolt in or be ready to catch it if it comes loose. This is probably not recommended by them, but it works and I have never had a problem. Be careful, you may have already done damage to it if you even attempted to pull on the rotor with a puller. That part is just plastic.

The ones that are tough to get off I will use the kit I have from Briggs(for the Generac generators). You tap the end of the rotor. Then you screw a shaft into the crankshaft and use a pusher bolt in the threads you just made in the rotor to push it off. Sometimes I have to make a custom shaft since I dont have a length that would work with a particular Powermate but it works well.
