Hi everyone,

I'm moving to this area in a few months and upon doing some research on the area I came across this site that states in the City of Roswell, GA you will be fined for distributing flyers and ads to homes in any means besides the US PO service. When I visited this town in the past I did notice the large amount of advertising material left at homes. Do your local counties/ towns have laws about this type of advertising??

Not all towns, but one in particular considers any flyers or door bags , etc as trash and will fine you as littering. Other towns dont care , but a few require a solicitation permitt , which entails a license with a photo on it .... But the majority of the towns dont bother you as long as you stop at the police station and give them your info and tell them what you are doing , so if anybody get s concerned that your a psycho and call the police , the police already know who you are and what you are doing so they can handle it... I think its' a good practice since there are so many psychos around..... good luck in your new home...

Handbill Ordinance

Have you ever received a baggie with rocks in it and a slip of paper advertising a "reliable" service of one kind or another tossed onto your driveway? Have you received enough to make your own rock garden? You are not alone.

Many Roswellians suffer from simple information overload these days. Some information is sought after, while other types bombard us whether we want it or not. One type of information distribution residents often find aggravating is the proliferation of flyers, business cards, leaflets or circulars placed on their doorsteps, tossed onto driveways or stuck to the mailboxes. Different from the flyers, or junk mail, for which postage is paid and have been delivered from your mail carrier, these pieces of paper have been delivered outside of the postal system and therefore often end up on lawns or curbs, doorknobs and porches, or collected on mailbox lids. Additionally, too many of these accumulating can signal that the property is unoccupied, which is a safety risk.

The City of Roswell passed a Handbill Distribution Ordinance designed to reduce litter and regulate the distribution. The Handbill Distribution Ordinance covers all types of printed or written matter, which advertises for sale any merchandise, product, service, business, opportunity or thing. It also includes material that may advertise a meeting, performance, exhibition or event for which there is a charge or collection.

The Ordinance states that by displaying the "No Handbill" sticker on a residential mailbox, that property is protected from the distribution of handbills. The stickers are available at Roswell City Hall, Community Development Department, 38 Hill Street, Suite G-30. You may have one mailed to you by calling (770) 641-3780.

Once the sticker is in place, should a property owner receive unwanted handbills, the person or entity whose name is on the material will be in violation of the Ordinance and subject to penalties including fines and possible revocation of a business license. In fact, each location where a violation occurs constitutes a separate offense. To report offenders, property owners simply need to call the Code Enforcement Office at (770) 641-3780 and provide the material received.

This same ordinance prohibits the posting of handbills, notices or other paper on lampposts, public utility poles, trees or other public structures, except as authorized or required by law. Handbills are not to be left on automobiles in parking lots either, but may be handed to a driver if the occupant desires to receive it.

The only ordinance of any kind here is that you must have a Peddler's Lic. to hand out fliers door to door.
