Stone shrub beds

What would be your approach to controling weeds in shrub beds with a stonescape surrounding the shrubs ? Would you use a pre emergent (spray or granular ) to prevent weeds and just spray weeds with glyphosate as they emerge or skip the pre emergent and just spray weeds as needed ?

Preemergent first, then postemergent for whatever breaks through. Ronstar Flo or WSP is good + Barricade or Surflan. In your area, one application of such a mix should hold you for most of the growing season.
