B&S: too much compression to start

Got a 15.5 Briggs OHV. Replaced the head gasket and put everything back together. Went to start and broke the rope as well as recoil parts. Replaced those and have tried putting the head back on with the piston at different positions including TDC. I have no idea...The engine turns smooth as butter when the spark plug is removed. Any ideas?????anything would be helpful!!!!
Thanks

Sounds like you have to relash the valves, the timing of the valves is out of sync
