Provide some engine numbers--model, type and code. There are several different Briggs engines.

Under normal conditions, a non venting tank would not shut down an engine in 5-30 seconds.

When you changed carbs, did you use a known good carb or a new one?

Check the compression. If it's under 60 psi, suspect some valve problems.

If the compression is good and you know you have a reliable carb, take a look at the crossover tube and the crossover tube gasket between the tube and the engine block. Over the last few years, I've discovered both conditions and either will cause the engine to suck excess air. Make sure the oring is present between the carb and the carb mounting bracket.

Run your hand under the head--if it's dirty and oily, you may have a head gasket leak.

Just a few thoughts--your mileage may vary.
