Small pastures?

Does anyone do smaller pastures. We have a lot of small hobby farms and had a lady ask me today. What all restrictions are out there I have done my in laws but thats about it.

I will treat my two acre pasture with triclopyr, or other pyradine containing herbicides. I do not treat with anything that contains 2-4D amine....only ester. I do not treat with arsenicals. The only thing is--what animals are on the farm. Bovine needs to be treated differently than equine. Lactating animals or stud farms is a real concern. These animals may be insignificant pets to others but you really need to be concerned with these herbicides reaching a lot more than this littlle food chain. A vet bill for a horse will be more expensive as per say replacing a red maple tree.
Lastly, the chemical choices are different and sometimes easier to obtain than for private and commercial applications. The law still bars the spraying of any pesticide whether it is commercial or residential. In this case it is considered Agricultural and will be somewhat different.

You will need to be licensed as an ag custom applicator. Other than that, the chemicals used for pasture weed control are similar, if not better that what is allowed on lawns. I spray small pastures too. A frequently used product is either Milestone or Escort. Don't know about your state, but the only legal place to apply Tordon is in pastures. Now that is some good stuff. All of the above herbicides will not harm animals. They are labeled for use on grazed land. The restriction that comes to mind is usage on land grazed by dairy cattle. There is a waiting period to prevent the herbicides from getting into the milk. Same is true for animals to be used for meat. I have treated land that was grazed by polo horses. The herbicides used were far less harmful to them than the poisonous plants infesting the grass.

There are Ag labeled products just for pastures and in my State anyone can apply them if the property is zones Agricultural. No license needed. BTW No Building permits needed for barns and other out building on a farm in my state.

This is one of those Real NEED but NO DEMAND markets. The problem in Pasture management is OVER GRAZING. Nothing you do can over come, over grazing. Over graze land for any length of time and you pretty much turn the land infertile. It can take years and tons on Nutrients to bring back Grazing land. JUST ASK THE CHINESE.

Small estate owners go though Cycles. They start by trying to be gentleman farmers with every creature known to man. then as the novelty wears off they slowly get rig of animals until the have none. Now they have to cut the Grass and I am afraid that is where the real market is. You would be better off offering Chemical Mowing to the failed Animal guru than pasture Management.


BTW Horses are hard on pastures. The pull the grass out by the roots.

I will probably look into this a lot the lady that asked me turns out she has already gave my number to two other ppl to try and convenience me to get into she is the head of all the local 4 h they are a vary tight nitched group.

Make sure you check your states licensing requirments, in Illinois they make you have a ag license.

Dont think there is a license but i will call in the am. If there is its new to me but you learn something every day i guess.
