Customer trying to sell me his mower

One of my customers, who is moving, is trying to sell me a mower he bought a couple years ago, and I'm wondering if I should take him up on his offer.

It's not one I would use for work, but I might be able to sell it to someone else, or at very least, use it to cut my own lawn at home. It's a Craftsman 42" lawn tractor with a bagger system attachment. They tell me they bought it for $1,700 but are willing to sell it to me for $400. Only thing wrong with it is the battery needs to be replaced.

Any thoughts?

You might be able to buy it for 400 and then sell it for 300........

Unless you got a use for it, I'd pass. MTD's are a hunk of HO junk.

I can tell you this, from someone who does a lot of searching on Craigslist looking for a good backup mower, I always see a ton of mowers like this, I'd imagine they are not super easy to sell

That's about what I figured. The only reason I'd use it at home is because of the size and condition of my lawn, but it'd probably do more harm than good. I hardly ever do anything to my own yard, and it's always overgrown and full of thick dandelions and mallow. My other mowers just clog up trying to cut through it. Really, I was leaning more towards selling it, but if resale value is horribly low, then I'll just tell the guy I'm not interested.

I could be a bit pessimistic, but I just wouldn't want it to become the elephant in the shop. It could either sell quickly, or you could walk by it everyday cussing under your breath thinking you shouldn't of even dealt with it in the first place.

Does the bagger have a separate motor and vac? If it does, then it might be worth it, but otherwise I'd pass.

I'm not sure if it does or not. Customer didn't say either way, and last time I looked at it was probably 6 months ago. A few months ago, a neighbor of another customer was trying to sell me his 48" Toro ZTR for something like $800. Someone's always trying to sell me somethin. Never anything I'm looking for though.

Now that might have been worth it.

This isn't THE mower he was trying to sell me, but same model and size. Essentially, same deal anyway: http://www.louisianasportsman.com/cl...1535423595.jpg

I agree with him. Only mowers I buy are mowers from customers that I will do or continue to do their lawn. I feel once I buy the mower, they probably won't go out and buy another. I usually will just give them credit towards lawn care at that. So since they are moving away, I would pass.
