Crack Question - Keeps growing

I had a new asphalt driveway done at my home about five years ago. After about a year and a half I got two cracks in it. I filled and sealed them. The next winter they grew wider and I had the driveway sealed and the guy used a hot rubber to fill these two cracks. Well ever winter since the two cracks have gotten wider and wider to the point of being 1/2 inch in width. The asphalt is also "shrinking" away from the concrete curb and walkway on each side. On my two cracks I am to the point now of filling them with sand and then seal them with tar. But why is this happening? That asphalt is three inches thick and is in great shape except for this shrinkage and cracking. Any idea's or thoughts on this?

Thanks for your help..................

Just looking. My driveway has tree roots pushing the asphalt up.

No roots or trees. The asphalt is level, just seperating..........

asphalt expands and contracts with the temps...sometimes there are spots that the binders in the asphalt fail and you get a crack. there are many reasons for cracks but this sounds like the answer. I wouldn't fill them with sand, I would use backer rod and rubberized hot tar.
