You're on an ISLAND. All runoff ends up in either the bay, the Sound, or works its way back into the aquifer.
Same place your sewer's end up (which is why dishwasher detergent is phosphate free too now).

Phosphorus runoff is now known to cause algae blooms, fish kills and brown tide, even in saltwater.
