I am wanting to buy a leakdown tester. Interested to see what you full time mechanics on here use. I have a kohler leakdown tester. Is that a good one. The regulator on mine is screwed up. Also I had somebody tell me you don't have to hold flywheel if you get it exactly top dead center is this true. Thanks for any help. This site rocks.

I recently bought an OTC # 5609 to replace one that went missing. I like it 'cause it has a whole range of plug adapt. incl. 10 MM. Kinda cheesy in that it uses an aluminim panel to cover the plumbing, I thought it was an aluminum block, but it works great. The pics in the amazon link will show what I'm talkin about. You should block or hold the flywheel/crank, 'cause on a lot of motors ya gotta bring the piston past TDC to get by the ACR.

You have to go 1/4 past tdc to do leakdown.

As you have to look at the rocker arms to make sure you are on the compression stroke...
I usually just loosen the rocker arms .and pop them off the pushrods...and just shoot the air to them... The rings shouldnt leak any more with the pistons at the top or the bottom... with no pressure from the pushrods..the valves should be closed...

Awesome slapper. Never would of thought of doing it that way. As the service manuals always tell you to do top dead center of compression stroke. But most don't tell you to go 1/4 past to do leakdown. They tell you go 1/4 past when adjusting valves. What tester do you use. Would like to hear more ways you other full time guys on here do it.

Slapper, using the pistons down technique, did you ever have any concerns about skirt wear/cylinder wear(egging, piston slap
) in the area where the rings are positioned when in the down position? I've been down both roads on the leak test but, at the time, didn't give a thought to comparing the results with piston in both positions. Have you done any comparison, Slapper? Andy, all I've used is a 15+ year old Kohler model. |

Dutch...the v twins don't usually egg or hourglass the cylinders like the long bore single cyl engines.. while I'm sure the rings will bypass a little more at the bottom of the bore..the leakdown test will give you worst case scenario results...good usable information...

Why go past tdc? Both valves should be closed, right? I've used a leakdown tester once, but couldnt justify buying one. I take the schraeder valve out of my compression gauge and hook the quick coupler directly to shop air at TDC. I have an adapter since the coupler on the compression tester is different than the one I use for my air tools. I have used a rubber tipped blow gun before when I didnt have the adapter available. I cant figure peercentage of leakdown, but I can tell where the leak is and how bad by how much air is flowing.

Bashby....cmon...step up to the plate and get the right tools...then you won't have to worry about getting misinformation...and barking up the wrong tree...
