Honda 21 HRC speed control cable

On my HRC trying to install a new speed control cable to the hydrostatic lever. I can't get the end of the cable into the slot so I bent the hell out of it and still can't get it.
Any Ideas? See picture.

Per the shop manual, looks like you need to loosen the locknuts on the other end of the cable on the handlebar, then let it hang loose. This should give you enough slack to position the cable tip so it can be installed into the lever on the transmission; see images here:

Caveat: I work for Honda, but the preceding was my opinion alone.
