i've seen these on many trailers...

that's what i was thinking, but on my trailer you could only fit about a 12" 2x4. the top round steel will not allow any further vertical extension.
really makes no sense why they would put this on my trailer, but ok... |

that is most likely a standard thing on that type or brand of trailer...utility trailers have them because designs call for them on utility trailers...
just my thoughts from most trailers i have seen here in florida LAWNMAN3... |

They are for several things. Stake pockets are for building up side boards, and are good for chaining large equipment down. I see the side rail is in the way.

Did you buy this trailer new?
Maybe it came without the rounded sides and the rAils were added later.... Or the rails were an option. Lol i don't know not do I really care to study the history of trailers lol

i did buy it used and i know it came new just like this, no changes since originally purchased...
i think lawnman3 nailed it... common practice for utility trailers... |

utility means universal use it for what ever you want 2....
