What are these slots on my trailer used for???

i've seen these on many trailers...

what are they for?

2x4 holders to build up the sides.

that's what i was thinking, but on my trailer you could only fit about a 12" 2x4. the top round steel will not allow any further vertical extension.

really makes no sense why they would put this on my trailer, but ok...

Are the sides original/factory to the trailer? If you bought trailer used, the steel sides may have been added by previous owner. If you bought it new, then I am stumped.

that is most likely a standard thing on that type or brand of trailer...utility trailers have them because designs call for them on utility trailers...

just my thoughts from most trailers i have seen here in florida

They are for several things. Stake pockets are for building up side boards, and are good for chaining large equipment down. I see the side rail is in the way.

Did you buy this trailer new?

Maybe it came without the rounded sides and the rAils were added later....

Or the rails were an option. Lol i don't know not do I really care to study the history of trailers lol

i did buy it used and i know it came new just like this, no changes since originally purchased...

i think lawnman3 nailed it... common practice for utility trailers...
