Tapering St.Augustine lawns
Do you guys taper the St.Augustine lawns along driveway, roadway and sidewalks? My last 2 helpers like to taper the edges on a 45 degree angle. It gives the lawns a unique look. But it does take a bit more time and effort vs the square edged look.

How is that taper being cut? String? I prefer a straight cut made with blades NOT STRING. Sorry for yelling. Mishandling of the grass via butchering it along the edges undoes all of the efforts made to cut at the correct height, with sharp machinery and the correct machinery. Butchered grass is susceptible to invasion by weeds and I rather prevent weeds in st augustine when possible given that the most effective herbicides are either RUP or no longer labeled.

Tapering the edges invariably leads to scalping; like Greendoctor said, it opens the turf up to weeds and chinch.

Straight cut edge with a blade for sure.
I don't cut SA but I took over a bunch of my bermuda lawns from some hack job guy who's idea of "edging" was to scalp the turf down level with the pavement with a string trimmer. It took about 2 months of no edging to finally get the grass to fill back in where he had scalped it every week. Some of my neighbors in subdivision do that too and it looks awful. I kinda wanna stop and give them an edging lesson sometimes but I don't wanna come across as an ******* who's in their business. It is their yard afterall and they can what they please. It just aggrivates me looking at the butcher job. |
