mushrooms in lawn....?

My neighbor says I have too many mushrooms in my lawn. Says I should let the lawn dry out for few days. I water infrequently and deeply fwiw. Before I moved here the neighbor actually took care.of.the lawn and thanks.to.his.scalp mowing, overwatering and high.nitrogen fertilizer this lawn had a 3/4" thatch layer. Lawn is looking much better since I've been here: organic based fert, lots of aeartion, 3.5" -4.0" mowing heights.

Temps.are.in.the 80's here. I just don't get people. Let the lawn dry out and go.dormant to get.rid.of mushrooms...? His own.scalped lawn is loaded with fairy ring.and sure enough last fall.he.let.his.lawn.go.dormant.to.try.to.kill off.the fairy ring. This guy comes.from.an agriculture background even. ???

The older the person is...the harder it is.to educate them.

Mushrooms generally occur when you have adequate moisture for even a brief period... depending on the type and number of mushrooms, I wouldn't use it as a gauge for how the lawn is doing...
Organic materials will also provide food for additional microbrial growth of all kinds, including the fungi known as mushrooms... if your turf is healthy and is allowed to dry between waterings, you are doing just fine...

I see muchrooms pop up after rains and wet spells. They typicaly grow in some sort of decaying materials. Could be your compost source or ??

In a reel mowed lawn they show up badly...I see them every morning and they are gone by noon. These are the tiny ones. I cannot think of a plant that can grow faster...I'd love to do time lapse on them.

What most people don't realize is that the mushrooms they see are just the fruit...the tip of the iceberg so to speak...a huge network of thread-like fungus is growing underground beneath it. What you see popping up in the lawn is simply the reproductive organs.
