choosing a truck

Hi. I need to buy a truck come spring time. I have narrowed my choices down to 3.

1) F350 pickup, short bed w/ cap & ext cab 4x4 diesel w/ plow

2) F550 dump truck with 11' body and L pack diesel 4x4

3) Mitsubishi Fuso FG 6cyl diesel 4x4 10' dump with I pack plow

I will be needing the truck for mowing lawns 3 days a week, and doing various residential landscape jobs 2 or 3 days a week. Also for plowing snow in the winter. I would like something that I can drive in comfortably when not working, that will fit into residential neighborhoods with a 16' trailer, a good 4x4 system is a big issue. The truck would only be required to do these jobs for 1 season, after that it can be moved to do other things, pickup would go to be a personal vehicle, F550 or Mitsubishi would go to landscape work full time. Any thoughts?

I am in the same predicament.

If you are willing to spend the money, I would forget about the 350. One, it does not dump, and 2, might be a little undersized for your needs. I am leaning towards the Mits. for my needs, but be prepared to spend. I am looking at the FE-SP, and for cab and chasis only, $33,000. Im sure the FG is a bit more due to the 4WD.

What type of 11' body is on the ford??

The 11' body has the L pack build into it, and has removable sides, and a removable top. I am pretty sure I could get a good deal on the FG due to some business connections.

The F550 is about $36,000 or somewhere around there. The Fuso would probably be about $40,000.

If you go with this set-up, I'd go with a long box.
I have a 02 F-250 P/S, with short-box, if I had to do it again, I'd go long.

I'd take the F-350 any day, But that is just my 2 cents The only thing I would change is to make it a long bed.

if after one yr this truck will be going full out to one task, i say get the 550. make the most of your year this yr, then move it to work only later. better to be inconvinienced on personal time than on work time, IMO.

but good luck going to the movies in it.

I have never driven the FG, but have had the same dilemma. I have an 99 F350 4X4 with the 141" wheel base with a 9' Dumper on it. It is the not quite as big as I would like but being such a short wheel base makes for a respectable plow truck in the winter. It manouvers well and pulled our 14' trailer with ease. I do not know if this helps because it is just a regular cab.

I would say the 550 would be the best work truck its kinda cumbersome to operate at times because it does need a acre to turn around in. I prefer longer wheelbase trucks like the 161 and 164 wb reg cab trucks a 8 foot box is almost useless to haul anything in. My trucks are equiped with 12x8 flatdecks lots of room on the deck and enough length to haul lumber without putting it over a headache rack. It is a pain to get in and out of parking lots with trucks with 12x8 decks I usually park in a area which is more open and I'am not gonna get trapped in a parking lot. I may have to walk a little farther but I figure its cheaper to walk then wipe out someones car with a steel deck.

The one thing about the 550s is they look like a P/U from a distance so it doesn't catch the local DOT mans eye when he is out looking for trouble. The Mitsu COE look commercial and that catches the DOTs attention so they have to come and have a closer look. Myself I don't live in city but I know the local neighbourhoods don't like commercial trucks parked on the street I know in Vancouver B.C. if the truck has a GVW higher than 5500kgs (12,127 lbs) you can't park on a residential street over night. You also have to follow all the DOT rules like going over scales and stopping at brake checks which can be a PITA but thats life with a commercial truck.

As a work truck I would go with the Fuso. The 350 does not have the bed for a useable truck. A 6' bed is just not enough, unless you're only going to sleep there. The 550 would be tougher to get in and out of tight areas w/ a trailer.

I just wish the local dealer would sell the Fuso they have sitting out front. Its a reg. cab 4x4 w/ a 12' dump and drop sides. Only missing a lift gate to be prefect.
