Hibiscus NOT Blooming?!?!
Guys.....this is personal.
20+ years this beautiful Hibiscus blooms in my Dad's yard so big you can see it when you turn onto his road. This year........barely two blooms. I mulched his yard for the first time ever and even the internet says to mulch it up. The one mistake I made is I mulched it all the way up to the roots!!! Didn't leave the custom 1 foot of no mulch space and the web says I made it hard to breathe!!! Every year it responds to water. Lack of it and the plant wilts and a good shot of water and it stand back up in an hour. With the mulch this never happened. I cleared out the area underneath a few days ago and am hoping for an end of the 9th homerun of blooms. Any comments?

I have 5 of them...they need a good balanced fertilizer.

Read on a website that too much Nitrogen could mess things up. This is the second year I am doing more than just cutting my dad's grass for him. I am actually landscaping it, putting money into it which I find fun. I may have accidentally allowed the Nitrogen I was spreading on the grass to spray into the plants, very possible.
I will for now on hand fertilize the grass by the plants and use a spreader for the rest of the grass so NO Nitrogen gets into any plants.

I feed mine what I put on my lawn...Lesco 24-2-11...seems to be working well.

These Hibiscus are actually from home depot...they had thrown them in a waste pile outside of parking lot...stripped of their pots and near death. With some fert and water they have don very well.

They look nice. My Hibiscus is more exotic and not only does every single bud bloom but they bloom VERY large like, you could stick your head in them.
I was kinda happy that after I applied the mulch, the Hibiscus stopped flopping over due to lack of water but I'd rather have the blooms back for sure.

Hibiscus enjoy water and as CA said a balanced fertilizer. I am assuming with your mulching you slowed water intake? Ensure they get feed and watered and I would expect blooms to increase significantly.
I have two on my property and changed them over to drip irrigation/micro irrigation....the bloom almost non stop down here minus when I prune.

foliar feeding gives instant results too by the way...if not possible I suggest using a 8-2-12 palm food from lesco. Worst case have you somehow altered the PH in that area?

Here's my opinion...hibiscus tend to decline after a certain amount of years. They look beat, put out few blooms, etc. the fact that you got 20 years is amazing to me re:hibiscus. Without seeing pics, my vote is they are seasoned...
