Is this scag hydro walk behind worth buying?

Hi guys, I've been looking at this scag 52 hydro walk behind for a while now and really want to buy it because I have always admired these machines. It looks like a tank!! Anyway. Here is a pic of it..

http://images.craigslist.org/5E35Fd5...b988651fed.jpg

No hour meter. But he says it runs flawlessly. Has sulky, mulching plate and also comes with extra blades and belts. It has 17 hp Kawasaki motor.
His last price is $1100.

But he lives almost 2 hrs away...

What do you guys think? Should I buy it.. I recently bought a John Deere HD75 hydro with floating deck and 17 hp kaw. for the exact same price. But I don't want to miss out on this one. What yall think??

Does it not have a belt cover? I'd offer $800 for it.

No the hood is missing. He said he never had it. Was missing when he bought it from previous owner. And this is his bottom dollar! I went through hell to talk him down to this price. He wouldn't even accept $1,000.
He has it listed for $1,500. But he lives in the middle of no where. Which is why he hasn't sold it yet.

I would show up with a grand in your hand and say I just brought 1000 take it or leave it has been on here for a long time and I am sure you could use the money. How strong are the pumps?

I agree check it all out, run it some if it runs good and everything tell him you could only come up with a 1K and that's it if he won't take it so be it.

Yeah that would be a nice way of approaching this. I actually thought about it. He'll probably accept.. Seeing as it has been for sale for a while and tons have called but 0 have shown up to look at it. I'd be the only one and he wouldnt want to me to leave without getting it. But idk. He says he's taking a loss on it as it.

I asked him about the pumps, they were my biggest concern.. He says they're very strong, tight, and bone dry, no leaks.

The only thing that's making me think twice is the fact that it's fixed deck.. Will it be scalping a lot? My 36 bobcat is fixed deck but it doesn't scalp at all because the deck is so narrow.. but this one is so much wider.. My JD 48 is floating deck but without rollers.. and sometimes with uneven lawns, when it turn, it scalps a little..

Should I spend triple and just get a zero turn rider instead since i already have 2 walk behinds? Or is this good enough without the bigger price? I'm 23 and very fit.. So the zero turn rider wouldn't have advantage of being more comfortable for me.. I don't get tired after a day behind the walk behind.. But if the zero turn is more efficient and cuts better, then it'll be worth it..

I don't know about the zero turn having a better cut, I have never compared it. But using walk behinds can really keep your overhead to a minimum compared to a ztr, but a ztr could be more efficient, I don't know what size lawns you cut like if a ztr would have a harder time maneuvering through crazy yards. Around me most use walk behinds between 36 and 48. I don't think that you can go very wrong on this buy. It seems like a solid machine and with a little paint you could probably sell it for more that you bought it for and make a quick buck if its not for you.

You definitely want to see how it runs. My partner bought the same machine a couple of years ago that also "ran like a top". It was newer than that one and burned oil, there was smoke on start up but it ran well. After a few months it began bending a pushrod on one cylinder. After replacing the pushrod a few times we realized it was time for a new engine- $1500. Now he has a good machine. Tore the old engine down and what happened was the exhaust valve got carboned up and the piston would whack it bending its pushrod. It was only burning oil in the one cylinder and there was lots of carbon on both the piston and cylinder head.

Damn that's a lot. I just text him and asked him if it smokes on start up. He said not at all. No smoke. Mower engines cost just as much as car engines. This is how I acquired the 36 bobcat. It was only 2 years old. My friend had bought it new, and was mowing when it slung a rod. Dealer quoted him 1540 for a replacement 15 hp Kohler Command Pro. I bought it from him for 100 and put my 16 HP Briggs V twin Vanguard engine that I yanked out of a snapper and gotten a beasty machine! lol
