Its the little things that you can do that will make the customer remember you next year. "Hey my lawn guy did such and such for me last year" Communication is key, but not too much, let the customer know you're thinking about them, and respond to calls quickly.

For 2012 I took 3 large properties away from a much larger and some would say a far superior company in terms of professional appearances. I'm sure they would look at it that way any way. They've got a lot newer equipment etc than what I do.
My equipment isn't new but it does operate reliably and does the same job their newer stuff does.

Any way......... appearances are not every thing.
As quality of work is much more important to the customers than having new equipment on the property.
I had one of the managers tell me last week that there is so much more small stuff that our company does compared to the other company that was SUPPOSED to know what they were doing.

It goes to show that if you do a good job you'll go a long way in customer retention. All three of these properties have told me they will be signing new contracts with my company for the new season.
