Deck lift assist has too much assist

Mower is a 2011 exmark x series 60inch with far too much deck lift assistance. whenever i go over bumps the mower deck gets sprung into the air and slams back down on the deck mounts. is there anyway to reduce the tension on this spring or completely remove it?
