How do I get good help?

I'm having difficulty getting all my work done. Where should I look for reliable help? I'm hoping to get someone who could one day take over the business. Someone who would be an asset to the business and help it grow.

Place an ad in classified section of your local paper. List all of the requirements for the new employee. You can put that this position will require at least 1-2 years of lawncare / landscape experience. This will bring in someone who may be between lawncare jobs. It is the right time to place this ad. If you wait until late February, you may miss the boat.

I have always found that looking for people with the right attitude are far more beneficial than seeking people who have previous experience. Now in the case of a "manager" you may have to look for experience like Barry suggested. Spread the word around. Place an ad at your local dealer. Your dealer may have an inside track to good people looking for new employment.

Oddly enough, it's my present employees (full time & part time) that find me good help. I've never had to advertise at all.

That is true what rodfather said. I only advertised once, and it was the wrost mistake, take about people that didn't what to work, all they wanted was a paycheck. I went through fellow workers, but there are three things you should know when hiring.

1. NEVER, and I mean NEVER hire friends or family, bad mistake

2. Hire hard!!! I mean through the interview, everything.

3. Never hire close friends, because then you will have screwing around.

Extra Credit:
When you do hire, put your foot down and tell them who is in charge and that you demand respect. Tell them that they are important to the company and if they respect you, you will respect them. *DON'T LET THEM TELL YOU WHAT TO DO*

Pay a decent wage and look for a quality person with a steady work history. If you hire a 7 dollar an hour person that is what you usually get. Treat that person like you have great expections from them and take no less

Once you find that 1st person, treat them right cause they will be your best source for additional crew members.

You might think about looking into the H2B program the INS has set up. It allows you to bring over legally a non-American worker. You have to pay them the going rate but they are not allowed to work for anyone else and if they quit they must leave. These are the rules as I understand them. With Hispanic workers you tend to get less of "I'm not doing that" or "this is hard work" that you might get from native Americans.

There are agencies that will locate workers for you and handle all of the paper work the Gov't tends to have.
