I slip the Invoice between the weather stripping of the front door just above the door knob. Most times I can work it in far enough it can't be pull out from the out side. I have been doing that for 7 years now and I haven't had the YOU WEREN'T HERE thing since I started invoiceing at time of service.

Door bags and invoice placement is the way to go really, but I bill out of office too and my small business card way is only to let them know of the treatment. I lawn sign jobs also, but hells bells, competitor's and neighborhood children often will pull them out. So, in all fairness there is all kinds of ways to prove you were there. This is a simple reason that when the smallest outbreak of weeds is present that I use blue marker in my water. It is mixed at 1.5 ounces per gallon of water so the owner can see the blue over the green of the lawn.
I did the lawn bag on the door knob for a while, but no offense is only allowing competition to come out and get info of your account. The price you are getting also. I bill through the office and nothing more.

Back in the 80's when I managed the spray division for a tree care company, I told my applicators to make sure they got some spray on at least one window to let them know we sprayed.

Yup, I'm going to burn in hell.

The pieces of work many of you have to deal with. Lawn is green, trees/shrubs are healthy, few weeds. Being questioned in that manner would be extremely insulting to me and the person questioning would be told so in no uncertain terms.

Its just life happening!

I often have to let my customers know. I'm not paid for what I apply or how much I apply. I'm paid for what I can accomplish. Quite frankly, I'll let them know if I had the power to give them what they desire buy simply farting on their landscape. I would bill for farting. They chuckle. I just don't think they quite understand. Really. That might not be my best analogy but man I wish I was that powerful. Talk about a high margin application!

I'm just playing man. That's not my only MO. I'm just saying. Sometimes I use the Jedi mind trick. Again just playing. I can't say that. You never know who might have irritable bowl syndrome. They may take offense and let one go in my check envelope. Seal it quick. Then send me a foul payment!

I worked for a guy in a different industry who did. He was a total clown. Customers only liked him because he was CHEAP. His work was often sub par and there product was ALWAYS late. I am talking lie he said 2 days and they got it in two weeks. No exaggeration.

If the customer was always right they probably would not need to hire me. (I'm not even always right, just most of the time). Just kdding. Get some yard markers and see if that takes care of it. Very cheap and only ads 10 seconds to the job.

I never thought about competitors pricing me from my door invoice but I am going to change that now. Thanks for the tip. I mail only when I am busy but probably will got to straight mail. Does not ad much to the overhead.

Cash Flow is an other benefit of invoicing at the time of treatment. When I started invoicing when treating my A/R balance went down while my Bank Account went up.
