Elegant not all of us are lucky enough to have a wise man in our lives like sehitchman, but lawnsite is our wise man. I am by far NOT a wise man when it comes to everything in this business. I just know there is to much liability renting the 72" from boss. Unless the client wants you only, no matter what the cost. Why would they pay you $160 if they could hire your boss for less, who has the right equipment.

I started out 3 yrs ago with 21" & was looking for deal on used 36" on craigslist. I bid some lawns that were way under priced for 21" but knew I was gonna have a 36". So I bid them as if I already had the 36". I had time so didn't care if it took 1.5 hrs with 21" cuz I knew once I had my 36" it would be 30-45 minute lawn. Hope everything works out & you get the account & a bigger mower in the future

Glad to help! On lunch at fulltime job, so I wanna share 2 liability expeiriences. 1 was myself & the other was my brother.

I was subbed some grass seed work from another LCO @ mobile home park where sewage lines were being in stalled. Because of budget, mobile home park was doing like 6 lots at a time. I was offered $100 a lot to level ground & reseed. Ground was hard, lumpy & uneven. I borrowed my grandpa's rototiller & motor seized. I replaced motor & could have bought used rototiller for price of motor.

My brother does custom wood work. He got a job to build a permanant canopy bed for a couples daughter, with drawers underneath, bookshelf footboard & stairs going up to the bed cuz it sat high off the ground. (The bed is part of the house) He needed bigger table saw then what he had, so borrowed a buddies. Well needless to say it broke while he was using it. He went out & bought new saw for his buddy because it was the right thing to do. Lesson my brother learned...he should have bought new saw to begin with. He now has his own saw but his buddy also has new saw. In the end he bought 2 new saws, when he could have just bought himself one to start.

Neither 1 of these examples was as costly as a 72" mower. If something would happen, you would regret using it.

I agree never borrow something that if it breaks you'll have to replace it. So if you can't afford to buy yourself one how are you going to buy your boss a new one?

You can't afford a 70" you use what you have.

As to pricing a lawn as with any other business when you don't have the capacity you can't charge more because it will take you too much time. Most likely you won't get the job because there will be too many competitors out there that have the right equipment and will do the job for the right price.

As to the original issue: I'm uncomfortable borrowing stuff from my boss that he needs to keep me employed. I would go on with the mower I had, and save up.

Worst case: You bung up a mower you can't replace, and you lose your job.

The other thing: If you are renting the mower from him, and it only takes an hour to mow the place with it, vs 2 hours with your own, by the time you've moved the mower back and forth, just where is your savings?

Are you renting his trailer? And using a pickup to commute to work that day instead of sub-compact? Unless you live close to the boss's place, it could take longer to do it with his equipment, or be more expensive because you are using the wrong stuff.

I think the motor burnt up. I will ask my brother tomorrow what happened to it.

The lawn is worth what it is worth. It doesn't matter if you use a 21 or a 72. It is worth what it is worth. Charge what it is worth and use your own mower.
