Felling 45" Diameter Tree with 18" Bar
Hello Gentlemen
I got a ms290 with 18" bar. I want to cut a tree that is about 45" diameter at the bottom. My manual covers felling a tree twice the diameter of the saw some, but not too in depth. Is there a method for which you would describe and reccomend to fell the tree? I appreciate any help thanks alot |

Things can get real pretty fast with trees that big. Id borrow a bigger saw or borrow someone with a big saw. Last time I did one that I had to get at both sides got a little hairy cause going from side to side for the final cut sucked.
Get your wedges ready. Be safe. |

Thanks for the response, you said you made a notch, then did 2 cuts on each side?

Yeah making the notch isnt so bad but when you make your final cut you want the tree to hinge evenly. Thats kinda hard when ya can only get half way thru the tree.
How many trees have you felled ? |

Not the tree to learn on. I have a decent amount of time behind a saw however if I even have to question it I call my tree guy who at times hasn't even had to turn off his truck to get out drop the tree and get paid. Money well spent.
Your out of your league on this one. |

You need to practice on some much smaller trees first. I wouldn't touch anything over 25" with an 18" bar personally. There is a fine art to felling a tree, and felling it correctly. We cut a lot of wood each year for personal use and selling.
What species of tree are you cutting that large? How is it leaning? Is it dead? Lots to questions to ask before you get into a situation where things could become life altering real fast.... |
