The customer pays in full upon completion of the job, and they have been walked through the system and taught how to maintain it.

Ditto, on large sites, I'd bill every few weeks as my labor and parts added up.
I never took a deposit, never believed in it.

Residential we get a 1/3 down

Commercial just depends on the general contractor.

I get 50%, sometimes the customer only gives up 33% so when the materials are on the job site I require 66%

33%. Helps to cover the cost of materials. Also the client is now financially committed therefore they cannot change their mind.

In some states, contract law requires that money changes hands, so it is the deposit that cinches the deal.

Only 10%. But a progress payment can be specified for when materials are delivered.
