52 Stander Engine

ok guys, i need some mechanical help here

I have a 52 inch stander with a 17 hp Briggs Vanguard engine..the piston rod recently broke and the rod went through the block essentially leaving me running on 1 piston..so I need to replace the engine!!

question is do i need to replace with an exact match engine? can I upgrade it to a Kohler 23 hp engine?

my 17hp was an electric start and I will get the 23 with an electric start as well....will I have any issues getting a Kohler instead the Briggs?

Thanks

what brand is the stander? if its a wright i don't think briggs was ever offered. personally i'd go with a kawasaki, and 17hp is a little light for a 52, i have a 24 on mine and at times think i should have gone with the 26

in that case i'm not sure, but at any rate 17hp sounds pretty light for a 52. depending on your hydraulic system you might wanna get a motor at least 22hp
