Town home assns, pia

My largest mowing acct is a 10 building town home assn. difficult lawn to mow, not a level spot on the place. A lot of incorrect grading when built, little slopes everywhere. Some dangerous. Assn wants me to use a WB machine only no riders. So I hoof it all with a 36 and sulky. Not happy...but I charge for the extra time.

Anyway the assn board is a pia. Can you cut a little higher, we want 4 inches? Yes, fine. Your trimmer guy is trimming too short, we want trimmed to 4 inches. Ummm, wtf? Do they realize how raggy that will look? And on and on...emails every so often. Wish they would just let us do our job...and a good one at that.

Last year I had homeowners coming out special requesting things for their own lawns. Ummm no, that's bullcrap, everyone gets the same treatment. Luckily that stopped.

Anyone else have troublesome associations you deal with? How long of a leash do you give before cutting ties and moving on?

Oh stop your whining .

Yes I have been mowing them, snow plowing them, fertilizing them, and they want too many things. But, charge them for it. I make about 2x's the wage off them.

When they want extra...give it to them, for a charge.

Listening to them is the ticket.

The easy part is doing the job and getting paid, the hard part is this account bother you.
Sooner or later you get to make the decision to keep cutting bait and putting up with the same old same old
or go fishing for a better account. You still have a choice, however the emotional capital spent on accounts can not be recovered once spent.

This seems very wise, thanks. Very good.

I honestly don't mind if they ask for certain things BUT can't stand it when they gripe once I do them OR they ask me to do stupid stuff that wont even look good, or stuff like mowing steep slopes that might get me killed or worse. Some of them are really idiots.

You seem like an smart enough person to know if you are being taken advantage of or not.

Sit back and think about it. If they are asking too much, tell them. You know...and I bet if you explain it well enough they will too.

I have one that sent me an email with a list of gardeners duties gave me a good laugh i emailed back a quote to do the work they listed and a reminder that i was hired to mow the lawn and specifically only to mow the lawn they decided to stay with my mow only price and the individual owners to continue to maintain the very small gardens in front of their own properties i think it was the 70% increase in fees i proposed

I don't mind them. One thing I did in my contract is state that any communication must be through the president of the hoa. They read and go over the contract before signing it so people are aware. Saved me some headaches

Update - received a 4th nasty gram from the Assn president a few days back. People are still not happy....they MEASURED the cut length and still do not like it. Good grief. Also told us not to come this week to mow, despite receiving ample rainfall and the lawn needing it.

So, that's it. I cut the cord, told them to find someone else or mow their own lawns. You done peed off the lawn guy one too many times folks. Now best of luck finding someone else mid season that is not already booked solid.
