Nothing wrong with bed rail. My first welding project (4H) was a large work bench made of bed rail, inexpensive and strong.

If that walk behind is a belt drive you're wasting your time. The belts will start to slip when you start pushing a good deal of leaves. I've seen the JRCO units on a belt drive Metro, once you get to like half capacity you're pretty much just digging ruts
