Tow capacity and GVWR question
Hey guys
I have a toyota tundra. The GVWR is something like 7400lb. The truck weighs around 6000lb. This means the truck is rated to carry 1400lb safely. It also says the tow capacity is 7000lb. now can i tow 700lb with 1400lb in the truck bed? or is that tow capacity when i am empty? thanks |

You can't exceed your rear axle rating with a load. So if you put 1400 lb in the back of your truck you still may be over your rear axle rating, then adding even an empty trailer will put you that much more over.

Technically if you have 1400lbs in the truck bed and you sit in the truck you are overweight.

Just make sure you don't exceed tongue rating for both the trailer and your hitch.

I just wanted to emphasize this. It's a mistake people make way too often, especially if they're loading and unloading by hand because it's less work. What can happen is that as the trailer bounces it can essentially pick up the rear end of the truck. Always make sure you have positive tongue weight...always!
