slit seeding questions

Ok I have a few customers interested in slit seeding. I was looking at the rental units and I was not impressed on how they work besides the landpride 48inch 3 point hitch version. So I was thinking if I used a normal slit seeder and then rolled the lawn would it pretty much do the same thing?

Well your typical walk behind style usually do a good job. I think that if you followed up with your approach it should only be better. What brand were the rentals that you looked at?

Its a bit late around here. Be prepared for slow germination. Use plenty of seed for thick grass sooner, (or less than optimum conditions).

I did see the forecast for the northern reaches for next week and yes, 60's for the next week and possibly lower 70's. If you want to give a slice seed job a wing, DO IT NOW. The higher temps and recent wetter trend may give you some decent emergence. Make sure your seed mix has a heavy dose of perennial rye in it as it comes up quicker. KBG may or may not come up now at this point in the season.

Otherwise you can run a dormant seed and wait another month. I am curious as a cat to see if slice seeding this late will pay off come next spring

I would also say use a lot of seed. Maybe up to 7-10 lbs/1K sq ft.

good question .
After you seed the yard, sift through the soil and see if you think most of the seed is buried a quarter inch deep. How much is too deep? How much is on the surface? Do you think it would be OK to just spread it on the surface and drag a mat over it?

Good luck. It may be going to be in the sixties and seventies next week but look at the week after. If the seed does germinate at all before the following week, and there is no reason it will, then it will die. If you seed now and hope for spring germination the seed will rot long before then.


Now I am not saying you won't get "some" viable grass blades (grass seed is oddly resilient and often surprises even me) but not "turf" and if you are doing this for hire I hope you have explained the limitations and expectations to your client....And allowed for a return visit in spring to re do the job in your pricing.


It is in my opinion Exactly the worst time you could possibly seed. To late for germination and growth and too early for dormant seeding which I really don't much go for either.

Why don't you guys with a bug up your butt to seed something wait till spring?????
