East coast cicadas return

So every news station is talking about the 17 year return of cicadas.

Is there anything we as lawn guys can do? Tell the customer to just wait it out and hand them earplugs? What about damage?

I'm unfamiliar with them and figure if your neighbor does nothing you will still need ear olugs!

When the last brood hit in Princeton NJ, the noise was so load it was hard to hear someone talking from 10 feet away, your feet crunched as you walked on shed exoskeletons and then the stink from millions of them decomposing. It was an event.

There is no control method for cicadas. They do aerate the lawns nicely & provide organic matter. :-) Cicada killing wasps may cause more damage to lawns. Leave them alone to do their job. Over seeding in might be a good idea.

Each female can lay up to 45 eggs in a row inside twigs on all types of trees which will cause extensive damage (or some might say a free pruning). you might want to put protective netting over young trees.
