I would think he would be required to close a certain # of accounts a week for him to be worth a base salary?

Use a salesman to gain commercial work, you should be able to do the residential stuff yourself.

I've considered a salesman, just couldn't wrap my mind around how to structure his pay? I was thinking of starting with a commision based salary until I see what he can bring to the table THEN go to a base salary plus commision IF he can actually get accounts?

gotta start somewere might be able to do 100 percent commision and its a side job for someone and you go out and get your stuff anyways. if he doesnt get anything you lose nothing then

My salesman goes out and gets the lead, writes up a bid, and follows up with the potential customer.

I don't like to talk prices, but the salary is not much more than minimum wage since there is commission involved.

He used to work for Nutrilawn in their sales department and he is able to obtain anywhere from one to ten leads a day. However, on average we close about five to 12 leads per week.

All of the yearly maintenance customers he obtains are on yearly contract. We lose only about 2% of customers a year due to finances, moving, etc. So their is no problem there.

I agree gotta start somewhere! If your a small company just starting out there are better ways, getting a high quality salesman that is actually getting you work is very expensive, they don't work for straight commision!

Are you generating the phone calls through advertising or is he cold calling?

Most of those guys only want the cheapest guys out there, you don't want to be one of those guys! I fired one of mine last season, they wouldn't pay for an increase in work, they sure wanted more done though, outside of the contract that is.

Those guys are few and far between though! And why did he leave nutri lawn? they had to be paying him more than you are!
