Blown Engine, 1140 hours
Kawasaki 31 hp engine with 1,140 hours blew this morning. It sounded like I had run over something, then the mower shut down. Engine had a hole in it between the oil filter and the dip stick. Engine has always been serviced between 30 and 50 hours intervals with filter replaced at each change. Any ideas on what could have caused this early engine failure?

Did you ever take the cover on the mower off so you could clean the fins. If they get clogged your engine will cook itself dead.

Sounds like you took good care of the thing, either tear it down yourself or have somebody at your shop do it to find out what went wrong. Sounds like you threw a rod, which could have been a defect in the metal, but that would have probably been a problem before 1100 hours

Any number of reasons. Sometimes rods have minute fractures or porosity in the casting process. Still sucks though.

I've got a new engine ordered and hope to have it running by the end of the week. I appreciate the comments.

All equipment is wore out. <- Never mind. All equipment has been repainted and with new decals. It's like I have new mower's again! 48" Ferris WB 36" Ferris WB All Echo hand helds <- That's how I feel at the end of the day.

We blew a B&S intek at 130ish hours, no surprise there.
