Employee's looking for work

I came across a ad for one of my employees looking for work on Craig's list. Basically saying work is slowing down for winter and he is looking for some small or large jobs to do on his own.
I am really tiring to be nice. But, I think he just might find out slow things can be. Like this week I have him doing busy work. Just so he can get hrs in.

Like I said I am tiring to be nice and I understand the fear of not being able to pay your bills because you miss work.
So what would you do?

As long as he isn't poaching customers he has a right to seek supplemental employment. I would suggets something seasonal to him like HD oe Lowes.

I'm just curious how some other owners or managers would react.
Personally I'm going to talk to him. Both of us will address each others concerns and needs.

It just gets me agro! I make sure they have 30 hrs in winter and they Avg. 45 in summer!

I remember when one of my mentors key managers of 15 years gave an option of raise or 2 weeks notice. Let just say his office was empty by the end of the day! Start looking for a new job you just might get one.

Since my post I just closed my biggest job ever so now I'm more worried about logistics. So I can have it and others completed by x-mas.

We run into the same problems people concerned about I was trying the winter and I start looking for other opportunities.
The only thing as an employer you can do is the best that you can't keep them busy.
Unfortunately you can't stop them from looking for work and it may affect you but that's the breaks. good luck to everybody and have a great Thanksgiving

Sorry my post got a little funky. what it should have said is employees get concerned about the winter and they start looking for other opportunities

Sounds like he has it together. If your down to busy work for him then either

A. Hes fairly justified in getting some more work or
B. You should let him know that you have the hours for him all winter.

I have him down to busy work because it is the week of thanksgiving. I let him know he will get hours and we on the same page.

I don't see a problem. One guy last year worked in a garage for most of the winter due to the lack of snow, and another worked on small engines in his garage. We all have to make a living. If I were only working 45 hours during the peak season I'd be looking for extra work at that time as well. So long as he doesn't cross the line or poach work I don't really see an issue.

Not everyone is happy working 30 hrs. He might like to work to have extra money or something.if he starts to ask off then that is different.
