Husky 51 Piston Scored...

Trying to fix this saw up. It runs and cut with no muffler but only has 105lbs of compression.

I took it apart and the rings broke or were broken? I dont know but check the cylinder walls out. Theres only light scuffs. I cant feel them with my finger or nail. I should be able to throw just a piston and rings in, right?

You should he able to dingle ball it and be just fine. If you had a 105lbs to start it wasn't too bad to begin with.

I dont know the history. I bought it broke for $75. It will run with muffler off and cut fine but dies as soon as the muffler comes next to it. The muffler has been modded and is clear. It is letting to much oil pass the rings. Its pooling under the muffler and is burning off. Air filter housing is clean though. I think it was just neglect. I was going to clean it up and reassemble but the ring broke. So now I'm throwing a piston in there.

It looks amazingly clean.

My guess is someone made a DIY porting attempt.

Improperly grinding the exhaust port may have left a ledge, the ring caught it and snapped. If ported wrong it may still run like junk, even with a new piston.

Invest in a new cylinder to prevent this from reoccuring.

Never heard of this. So what is this like part of a muffler mod?

I did wipe some carbon and burning off the piston with 2000 grit sandpaper. Hope the cylinder is good. I already ordered a piston and rings.

Yeah, in the future don't give more than $20 for something that doesn't run...
Seriously, if you're going to pay folks to get rid of their junk...
Granted, that 51 might be worth something if you can get it running...

Common in the motocross world. Pretty hard to ruin the running of the engine. You use a dremel tool to smooth rough edges and sharp turns to improve airflow. Polishing the exhaust port helped keep carbon from building up. You can smooth port the same way without replacing the cylinder which usually come rough anyways. A dingle ball hone will fix that cylinder. You don't want to go too deep on the honing as some are only thinly nickel plated.

Running a 2 stroke engine without a muffler can cause the rings to break...
The muffler dampens the exhaust...acts like a shock absorber..and keeps the rings from trying to fly out of the exhaust port..
The muffler also affects the engine timing....you can hotrod a 2 stroke by slowly enlarging the muffler until the engine maxes out
.
